The U.S. Department of Energy identified that about 1,500 trillion Btu of unrecovered heat is lost with exhaust flows annually. With 60% of this exhausted heat being at temperature below 250°C, this “low temperature” waste heat has a high thermal value due to latent heat that hidden in water vapor content. This heat is lost due to technical complications of its recovery by using traditional methods and off-shelf equipment because most commercially available heat exchangers are designed for sensible heat transfer.
Waste heat is an alternative clean energy source that leverages an energy efficiency potential since the beginning of the world energy crisis. Each fluctuation in commodity price has prompted the further development of waste heat recovery technologies. For last decades the value of waste heat recycling has grown significantly. Nevertheless, the challenges in waste heat recovery implementation remain the same: availability of an appropriate consumer of the recovered heat and a lack of heat exchange equipment capable to work at special heat recovery conditions.
